B4 - Kei te pehea koe?

This week is Te wiki o Te Reo Maori - Maori language week.  The theme this year is Arohatia Te Reo (Cherish the Language). At Eastern Hutt School we have all been doing lots of fun Te Reo learning this week.

In B4 we think we already know lots of Te Reo Maori kupu (words), but this week we have been trying extra hard to use Te Reo Maori every day.  We have been using greetings and asking each other how we are feeling.  We know lots of words to describe how we are feeling (happy, good, well, hot, cold, sleepy, sick).

Here are some videos of us asking "Kei te pehea koe?" (How do you feel?) and replying to our partner with "Kei te  ______ ahau."  (I feel ______).  Can you guess how we are feeling?  Some of us have used actions to help you to understand.

To see the rest of our videos check out our blog post here:

Ka mau te wehi B4! Ka pai to mahi!
(Awesome B4! Great work!)

Here is a list of all the Te Reo Maori we used in our videos so you can learn how to say how you feel too!
Kei te pehea koe?  - How do you feel?
Kei te _____  ahau  - I feel _______
ora - well
harikoa -  happy
hiakai - hungry
hiainu - thirsty
makariri - cold
wera - hot
mauiui - sick
ngenge - tired

G1

Since it's Maori Language week Mrs Hudson has taught G1 a game called  Candlesticks. Here are the instructions and vocabulary.

We had to line up on one side and Mrs Hudson would call oma. If she did we all ran and the taggers would try to tag us. When they tagged us they had to shout hopu. People could get rescued by someone skipping around them and calling whakaora. We are going to do a different game each day.
Oma- Run
Hopu- Catch
Whakaora- Rescue

Day Rua of the Maori games in G1. Today Mrs Hudson taught us the human knots and crosses. When you play there are toru chairs in toru rows so there are iwa chairs in total. Mrs Hudson numbered us off in a boys and girls line then she called out a number in Maori and the people who are that number race towards the chairs to get toru people in a row so they can get a point.

For Day Toru of Maori language week we played a game of Ultimate Atua. Mrs Hudson taught us the instructions which are... Walk around like a kuri (dog) and go up to anther person who is acting like a kuri then start playing paper, scissors, rock. The winner goes up to a Moa but the loser stays as a kuri. Depending on if you won or not you move up or stay as a kuri. These are the levels... Kuri - dog Moa- Moa Tame/Wahine-Male/Female Atua-God Aymee and Holly.
 Ebru was our first Atua.
Another Atua!
 Paper, scissors, rock...

G3

This week is Maori Language week. To celebrate and cherish our Maori language we have been practising our Te Reo. Today we made a movie of us singing E Papa with Kathryn and Jacob using rakau.
A big thank you to Elora and Josh for directing our movie!

Our wonderful kapa haka students created this Wordle around Matariki. Thank you Naisha, Finn, Ollie, Emily and Ethan.

Matariki is a group of seven stars, also known as the Pleiades. Towards the end of May, Matariki disappears from view. It reapears at the begining of June.

E3

This week is Maori Language Week. To celebrate, we finished learning how to sing and sign Ma Te Mahi Ka Ora. Ma Te Mahi Ka Ora means "From hard work comes success". As well as making this video, we also sung and signed it for the Middle Assembly today.

For te wiki o te reo Maori we made some labels and we said some whakatauki.
The whakatauki is about keeping yourself healthy by exercising!! Make sure you do it to stay fit!!

Tama tu tama ora tama noho tama mate.
If I'm active I'm healthy, if I'm not active I get sick.
We figured this out from the words noho - to stay (still, e noho - sit), ora (ka ora from the haka - life - feeling well), mate (ka mate - death).

We also drew some taniwha and quoted some Maori phrases from the story Tamure and the Taniwha.

Can you figure what the labels mean?

Tino pai A9!!

A2 Avatars have been learning about Te Reo Maori this week.  Why? The Avatars wanted to focus on Maori language week/ Aromatia Te Reo celebrated across Aotearoa.   On Thursday, we played 'I spy' looking for classroom objects named in Maori around our wonderful classroom.  Mr. O' Sullivan would say 'I spy' catchphrase and we would search for the mystery object.   Check out our photos and see if you figure out what the object is?

E6

his is Maori Language Week!  During Maori Language Week everyone in Aotearoa, New Zealand is encouraged to give Maori Language a go.    In E6 we have been using te reo Maori wherever and whenever we can to help celebrate te wiki o te reo Maori.  We think we are pretty good at doing this any time of the year, but this week we have been trying even harder!

What have we done in E6 during Maori Language Week?
We have sung waiata.
We have greeted each other using te reo Maori.
We have used phrases and words like e tu, e noho
and haere mai ki te whariki.
We have read some Maori Legends.
We practised the Maori version of our National Anthem,
 and our school song.
We are learning to introduce ourselves using te reo Maori.

Watch us singing our favourite waiata of the week - Tirama Tirama (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star).

What great fun we have had using te reo! E6 Super Stars - can you share your Maori language learning with your whanau at home? You might share a song, a phrase, a story or a word! We'd love you to leave us a comment and let us know what te reo you have been using this week.

 Arohatia te Reo!
Live it! Learn it! Love it!

B3 Nga mihimihi

This week is Maori language week and we have been learning different greetings. We all know how to say hello in Maori.  Tena koe is to one person, tena korua is to 2 people and tena koutou is to three people.  We can say good morning in Maori which is ata marie and good afternoon which is ahiahi marie.  Ka pai B3!
